Magicians and mentalists have long used the near-miss as a way of making mind-reading more believable. “SAM” is a spectator mind-reading effect that uses your phone for the prediction. The effect is simple: You quickly Google the word you’re thinking of, and place your phone face down as the prediction. Then, and only then, your participant attempts to read your mind to figure out the word. When they reveal the word that you were thinking of, they didn’t get it, but they got incredibly close. For example, they may say “Magazine” and you Googled “Newspaper”. This near miss makes the mind-reading feel incredibly real and sells the idea that they read your mind. The word that was Googled was never said out loud, making voice recognition seemingly impossible.
Because “SAM” leverages OpenAI’s technology, “SAM” is available in any language and is the perfect method for casual mind-reading.
